The American Heart Association (AHA) released a scientific statement on July 14, 2022 that states mental health support is essential to care at every age for people with congenital heart disease.

The statement is titled “Psychological Outcomes and Interventions for Individuals with Congenital Heart Disease: A Scientific Statement from the American Heart Association.” The statement’s lead author is Adrienne H. Kovacs, PhD, CPsych, Toronto, Canada, who is a valued friend of The Roadmap Project.

In addition to the emphasis on providing lifelong psychological support to individuals with congenital heart disease, the statement also makes a strong call to integrate mental health professionals in Congenital Heart Disease specialty care teams.
